Abigail Edan, 4, was held captive by Hamas in Gaza until her release in November as part of a hostage agreement, and President Biden met with her at the White House on Wednesday.

Reporters were informed by White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan that while the meeting was a happy occasion, it also served as a sobering reminder to President Biden of the work still to be done because Hamas continues to hold hostages months after its terrorist attacks against Israel in October.

She was able to be safely returned to her family, so this was also a joyful moment, according to Sullivan. “And I believe the most significant thing for the president was that it served as a reminder of the work that needs to be done and the urgency with which the government and he personally must work to secure a cease-fire and hostage agreement so that everyone can return home.”

The parents of Edan and her siblings perished in the terrorist attacks that occurred in Israel on October 7. Edan was the youngest American citizen taken prisoner by Hamas after those assaults. She is a dual citizen of the US and Israel.

In order to safely free the remaining hostages and permit the delivery of more humanitarian aid into Gaza, where thousands of Palestinians have been killed in Israeli military operations in retaliation for the attacks on October 7, the United States continues to press for another ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

According to Israeli officials, there are still over a hundred detainees in Gaza. There are up to six American citizens among the hostages.
