Once again on the road: How much time will each AFL team fly in 2024?

As the team that will fly the most in 2024, the Fremantle Dockers have won the AFL’s unwanted prize.

Zero Hanger has crunched the numbers to reveal how many times each team will be forced to use an airport and how many hours they will spend in the air after the AFL’s fixture release on Thursday afternoon.

Although the Dockers and West Coast Eagles, two teams based in Western Australia, have to travel 11 hours each way from Perth, Fremantle’s travel time is increased to nearly 100 hours due to the requirement to use connecting flights to get to Launceston and Alice Springs.

The two teams from Queensland come in behind the Eagles, followed by the two teams from Sydney. Melbourne and North Melbourne, who both play their home games outside of the Victorian capital, will play more time in the sky than the two teams from Adelaide.

The remaining Melbourne-based teams all follow, with the exception of the Western Bulldogs, who will have the least difficult AFL travel schedule in 2024—though that doesn’t account for their frequent road trips to Ballarat.

Having said that, the team that limits transit time the best in 2024 might be the Carlton Blues.

The total amount of time that each team will fly in 2024 is shown here.

All interstate travel took place via flights, with the exception of trips by Sydney teams to Canberra, Brisbane or the Gold Coast for away games by the Lions or Giants, and Melbourne teams to Geelong, among other destinations.

A training camp may occasionally be held if teams are playing multiple away games in the same region back-to-back, but it was also expected that teams would fly home after each away game (apart from the Suns playing two games in the span of five days in Darwin).
