The print edition of Gazzetta dello Sport (18/07/23 – as relayed by Sport Witness) has claimed that Napoli will not be able to sign Giovani Lo Celso on loan as Tottenham are not willing to sanction a temporary deal for the midfielder.

The report explains that not Napoli have ‘a lot of work to do’ to even get the negotiations started for Lo Celso, due to Tottenham’s stance and the fact that the midfielder currently earns €4.2m (£3.6m) per year at the North London club.

Spurs want a permanent sale for Lo Celso

It is explained that Daniel Levy has been clear with the Serie A club that a loan offer would only be considered if it comes with an obligation to buy the Argentine.

Furthermore, Gazzetta add that Barcelona’s interest in Lo Celso further complicates the operation for Napoli.

This update comes just a couple of days after TuttoMercatoWeb claimed that there is still a difference of around €10m (£8.6m) in the Italian club’s and Tottenham’s respective valuations of the 27-year-old.

Spurs Web Opinion

I do not think Postecoglou would be in a hurry to sanction Lo Celso’s sale. If the Argentine also impresses in the next couple of friendlies, as he did in Perth on Tuesday, the Spurs head coach might be persuaded to keep him as a backup to James Maddison.

However, the big question is whether the former Real Betis star would be open to staying at Tottenham and fighting for a place in the side.
