Manchester United have agreed to sell young prospect Charlie Savage to Reading, according to reports.

An announcement is expected over the future of Manchester United youngster Charlie Savage.

The MEN reports a deal has been agreed for Savage to sign for the League One club on a permanent basis.

Manchester United are set to insert a sell-on fee into the sale. At this stage the potential transfer fee has not been confirmed.

Charlie Savage moving on

Charlie Savage is well regarded at Manchester United, even captaining the team in the second half against Leeds in the friendly last week.

He did not feature against Lyon and is not part of the squad heading on pre-season tour to the USA.

Last season he made a positive impression on tour alongside Zidane Iqbal, who has since been sold to Dutch side Utrecht.

Savage made one first team appearance for Manchester United, under Ralf Rangnick as a substitute against Young Boys in 2021.

Erik ten Hag kept him around the first team early last season, before Savage went out on loan to Forest Green Rovers.

Savage better for hard loan spell

Savage’s first taste of senior football was a difficult one. He signed for a team already adrift in the relegation zone, under Duncan Ferguson, in his first management role.

He made 15 appearances in all, scoring once, and featured in a surprise victory over eventual promotion winners Sheffield Wednesday.

He now returns to League One, expected to sign for a side at the top of the table after their Championship relegation last year.

The MEN report Savage is keen on a permanent exit as he wants to play first team football.

His path at United was incredibly tough and made harder by Kobbie Mainoo overtaking him, with Dan Gore also breaking through.

Savage, 20, is a talented midfielder who can also operate in defence and is a Wales under-21 international.

His dad Robbie came through United’s youth system and went onto enjoy a very strong professional career as a Premier League player after leaving the Red Devils, and Charlie will look to do the same.

As part of the agreement along with the sell-on clause, United will be given the option to match any future bids Reading receive for Savage.
