NFL is looking into why Joe Burrow was left off of the Bengals’ injury report, an AP source claims.
According to a person familiar with the decision who spoke to The Associated Press on Friday, the NFL is looking into why the Cincinnati Bengals failed to include Joe Burrow on their injury report prior to their game against Baltimore on Thursday night. Burrow left the game in the second quarter due to a wrist injury that will end his season.
Before the Bengals’ 34-20 loss to the Ravens, Burrow was seen stepping off a bus with his right hand in what looked to be a soft cast. The Bengals posted and then removed the video from their social media accounts.
Burrow said on Friday that he was not wearing a compression sleeve because of the injury that ended his season.
Burrow declared, “This is an entirely different thing.” Guys frequently wear compression sleeves on airplanes because, as you may know, things can swell up at that altitude. You get a lot of bumps and bruises playing football. This injury is entirely new.
The person who spoke to The AP on condition of anonymity said that NFL officials regularly review cases similar to theirs because the review is not being made public. If a team violates the NFL’s injury report policy, they risk fines and possibly losing a draft pick.
Burrow’s throwing wrist ligament torn, Cincinnati coach Zac Taylor announced on Friday that Burrow will require surgery. Taylor claimed that upon stepping off the team bus, he had no idea what Burrow had on his throwing hand. Coach stated that Burrow looked fantastic during pregame warmups and practiced nonstop all week.
According to Taylor, “guys always wear different compression things on the plane.” “Every time they do it, I haven’t made it a point to ask them all about it.”
After throwing a 4-yard touchdown pass to Joe Mixon, Burrow, 26, left the game. The quarterback winced in pain as the ball slipped out of his hand during a practice throw on the sideline. Burrow then appeared irritated as he entered the locker room.
The Bengals (5-5) probe was initially reported by ESPN.com.
When he left, Burrow was 11 of 17 for 101 yards and the touchdown. He was replaced by backup Jake Browning with the Bengals down 14–10.
Although Burrow had a calf injury earlier in the season, he hasn’t missed a game yet.
In his four years in the NFL, Burrow has experienced season-ending injuries twice. The most recent occurrence occurred in Week 11. He was selected as the first overall pick out of LSU in the 2020 NFL Draft, and during a game against Washington in his rookie season, he tore both his ACL and MCL in his left kneel

For the Cincinnati Bengals, 2023 begins today with the post-Joe Burrow era.
According to sources, the team’s quarterback, Jake Burrow, is scheduled to undergo wrist surgery on Monday. It is anticipated that Burrow will fully recover in time for the 2024 season. On November 20, head coach Zac Taylor made it clear to reporters that Burrow’s 2023 season is over, regardless of how far the Bengals could go in the postseason if they make it.
The Bengals are playing their first game without Burrow today against the Steelers. The league is also looking into whether Cincinnati ought to have included Burrow on its injury report before playing the Ravens on November 16. Prior to the game, Burrow appeared to be wearing an apparatus on his right wrist in photos posted to social media.
According to people with knowledge of the team, the Bengals have provided the NFL with hours of video demonstrating Burrow’s health before the game. Those who have watched the video claim that Burrow performed all of his typical reps and threw the ball normally during practice—all without a brace. It also contains medical staff records attesting to the fact that Burrow suffered a “acute,” as Taylor has clarified. According to sources, the doctors do not believe that the injury occurred gradually.
Burrow did not receive any treatment prior to practice and did not miss any time in getting ready for the Ravens game, according to information provided by the Bengals, according to sources.
The NFL chose not to provide a statement regarding its probe.
On Nov. 17, Burrow told reporters that his wrist injury had nothing to do with the compression sleeve he was wearing, which was intended to minimize swelling during flights.
Burrow declared, “This is an entirely different thing.”
Today, Jake Browning will start for the first time in his NFL career against Pittsburgh, and the Bengals coaches will employ the same play-calling menu and offensive scheme as they would have used with Burrow starting at quarterback. Coaches have complete faith in Browning, and even though Cincinnati may run the ball a little bit more to help him, Browning has access to the entire game plan.
Browning’s skill “allowed me to call everything that was on the menu and not have to dumb it down because a new guy’s coming in the game,” Taylor told reporters last week.
The Bengals coaches intend to use the exact same offense and play-calling menu with Jake Browning starting at quarterback today against Pittsburgh, just as they would with Burrow at the position. This will be Browning’s first NFL start. Browning has the entire game plan at his disposal and the complete trust of his coaches, even though Cincinnati may run the ball a little bit more to help him.
“I was able to call everything that was on the menu and not have to dumb it down because a new guy’s coming into the game,” Browning’s skill set, Taylor told reporters last week.
Browning gained from working with Palmer in a similar way that Burrow did after undergoing ACL surgery, in part because he learned how to move more efficiently.
Working with Palmer, Browning imitated Burrow’s movements, learning to be effective both off-platform and in the pocket. This resulted in his breakthrough performance during training camp this year, earning him a backup position. Like Burrow, he can maintain composure under pressure, as Taylor saw when Browning replaced Burrow in the Bengals’ Week 11 matchup with the Ravens.
Palmer is upbeat about Browning’s future because of this.
“Things are lining up nicely for Jake Browning to go on a run,” Palmer stated, “based on his style of play and the situation he finds himself in.”
Burrow will spend as much time as possible with the team after Monday’s surgery, watching Browning try to lead his group to the postseason.
