Saints quarterback Carr following a concussion at practice. Injury to the  foot and hand sidelines Hill

(AP) METAIRIE, LA Derek Carr, the quarterback for the New Orleans Saints, participated in limited practice on Wednesday as he progresses through the NFL concussion protocol.

More than six Saints players, including co-leader in total touchdowns Taysom Hill, did not take part, though.

Malcolm Roach, the defensive tackle, and Marcus Maye, the safety, were also placed on injured reserve by the Saints.

Carr left Sunday’s 33-28 loss to Detroit with rib and shoulder injuries in addition to concussion-like symptoms. As he released a pass, Detroit pass rusher Bruce Irvin slammed the ten-year veteran to the ground, injuring him. Irvin received a warning for being unduly rough during the play.

The 32-year-old Carr was knocked out of a game for the third time this season, and it was his second concussion diagnosis in 22 days.

Regarding Carr’s rib and shoulder ailments, Saints coach Dennis Allen remarked, “He feels pretty good with all the other ills that he’s dealing with.” Allen stated that Carr’s recuperation from the concussion is “the primary thing,” casting doubt on his availability for Sunday’s home game against Carolina.

Allen refused to say if doctors have talked about how Carr’s multiple concussions in recent weeks could potentially complicate his prognosis.Allen remarked, “I really can’t comment on it.”

Jameis Winston would probably start against the Panthers if Carr is unable to play.

Carr, a free agent, is in the first year of a four-year, $150 million contract. Carr played his first nine seasons in the NFL with the Raiders. His play has been erratic throughout his first season in New Orleans, and the offense has had trouble finding the end zone.

Carr was jeered by Superdome patrons on Sunday both when he entered the field and during the introductions.

Derek was aware of it. Everyone heard it. We were aware of the situation. We’re not completely unaware of it, as running back Alvin Kamara put it. “I have never had an experience like that before. It doesn’t appeal to me. I am aware of Derek, and he does not enjoy that. We must prevail. Gaining success only covers up a lot of those issues.

Additionally, Kamara seemed hesitant to criticize injured receiver Michael Thomas’s social media posts during the game, which seemed to be critical of Carr but were also sufficiently ambiguous to leave room for interpretation.

According to Allen, the club will handle any discipline pertaining to Thomas’ posts “in-house.” In the meantime, Thomas deleted his account on X, which was formerly Twitter.

“Although I haven’t seen all that he tweeted, I wouldn’t say that I particularly have a problem with anything,” Kamara remarked. That is his individual viewpoint. It is now up to him if he wishes to broadcast it.

The manner and timing of Hill’s injuries are unknown. He participated in the entire game on Sunday, running the quarterback position 13 times for 59 yards and a touchdown. He also played tight end, where he hauled in two passes for fifteen yards.

Hill did not appear to be hurt when he spoke with reporters following the game.

Wednesdays are usually practice-free days for veteran Saints players like tight end Jimmy Graham and right tackle Ryan Ramczyk, who need the extra day to heal in between games. However, Hill hasn’t taken any extra time off this season.

Hill and Kamara are tied for the team lead with five total touchdowns this season—four from running and one from receiving. Kamara has also scored four touchdowns from running and one from receiving.

Maye has started all seven of his games this season despite having a shoulder injury. He has three tackles for loss, a sack, and two interceptions.

Despite suffering a right knee injury on Sunday, Roach has appeared as a substitute in all 12 of New Orleans’ games this year. He has a quarterback hit and three tackles for loss.

Receiver Rashid Shaheed (thigh), running back Kendre Miller (ankle), defensive end Cameron Jordan (ankle), and rookie defensive end Isaiah Foskey (quadriceps) were also absent from Wednesday’s practice.

Taysom Hill was not present on the Saints’ practice field on Wednesday, but Derek Carr was.

Hill was not present for the team’s first practice of the week, head coach Dennis Allen informed reporters. Hill, who has injuries to his left hand and foot, will continue to be assessed, according to Allen, as Sunday’s game against the Panthers approaches.

After being hurt in the Lions’ loss last Sunday, Carr is still under the concussion protocol; however, on Wednesday, he was able to work in a limited capacity. Carr can keep moving in the direction of being cleared for the game against Carolina if he reacts well to that work.

Against Detroit, Jameis Winston took over for Carr at quarterback, and Hill also plays the position, so the Saints will have a lot of moving parts to figure out in the coming days.

Derek Carr, the quarterback for the New Orleans Saints, has frustrated a lot of fans with his on-field performance. For this reason, a lot of supporters are hoping that the Saints select a quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft. Jayden Daniels, the quarterback for LSU, was linked to the Saints in a mock draft conducted by Pro Football Focus. The coaches don’t seem to be as irritated. Despite this, Carr’s increasing injuries should force the front office to select a quarterback early in the draft.

Carr has already sustained two concussions this year, two separate shoulder injuries, and this past weekend’s rib injury added to his list of ailments. Carr has never sustained injuries this frequently. Carr will turn 33 in March, making him 32 now. This might be an anomaly, but it could also be a portent of things to come.

Mickey Loomis may like to think otherwise, but 33 is not young in the NFL when it comes to injuries. Dennis Allen and Derek Carr might still be paired in 2024, but the Saints shouldn’t rule out selecting a quarterback first overall. Like player performance, age and health must be taken into consideration. For a season, a rookie quarterback can sit and learn.

Although the Carolina Panthers have been declared out of the NFL playoffs for 2023, their influence on the postseason landscape is still present.

Sunday at 1 p.m. in the Superdome, the Panthers (1-11) travel to New Orleans to play the Saints (5-7). According to FanDuel Sportsbook, the Panthers started as 5.5-point underdogs with a 39 over/under.

The winner of this NFC South matchup will advance to the playoffs, but the home team faces uncertainty at quarterback following Derek Carr’s early injury exit from their Week 13 loss to the Detroit Lions.

One of the favorites to take home the league MVP trophy is still Jalen Hurts. Hurts has a good chance of winning if the Eagles secure the first seed in the NFC.

That hasn’t stopped a pundit and former NFL quarterback from making a bold suggestion, though.

The brother of Saints quarterback Derek Carr, David Carr of NFL Network, suggested on Tuesday that the Eagles bench Jalen Hurts in favor of Marcus Mariota to give Hurts more time to heal.

Carr argues that in order for the Eagles to maximize Hurts’ potential, they must get him back to 100 percent.

This is a young Lions team. They added a veteran recently, and he made an impact on Sunday in New Orleans.

In Week 13, 36-year-old Bruce Irvin made his Detroit debut. He had a sack. His day was ended by a big hit he gave Saints quarterback Derek Carr. Irvin completed everything in just 11 snaps.

After the Detroit victory, Irvin gave PFT a call.

“I woke up this morning, I felt like a kid before Christmas,” Irvin stated. “I was excited. Just trying to take full advantage of this opportunity, because [this] part of my career, you know, the opportunities are very limited. I’m just glad to be back, man, and to be working as a team once more.”

David Carr spent ten seasons as a player, mostly with the Giants and Texans.

In 16 games as a rookie, the former No. 1 overall pick passed for 14,452 yards and 65 touchdowns despite being sacked an NFL-high 76 times.

During his career, Carr was sacked 267 times, which aided in his transition to an NFL Network broadcasting career.

Carr joined the overreaction bandwagon following the Eagles’ 42-19 loss to the 49ers on Sunday. He spearheaded the dissemination of false information, claiming that Hurts is having difficulty reading defenses and, even more ridiculously, he suggested that Nick Sirianni bench the All-Pro Hurts in favor of Marcus Mariota, the backup.
