Breaking: Texas Longhorns’ promising rookie quarterback, who had limited usage, unexpectedly entered the transfer portal

With a few weeks left before the Texas Longhorns play in the College Football Playoff, a quarterback for the team made the unexpected decision to use the transfer portal. There’s an embarrassing amount of wealth in Texas’ quarterback room.

Quinn Ewers is anticipated to remain at Texas for the 2024 campaign rather than declare for the draft. It appears that Arch Manning wants to remain in Austin. However, it is said that Maalik Murphy will use the transfer portal.

..
Pete Thamel of ESPN reports that Murphy is going to use the transfer portal and won’t be playing for Texas in the postseason. Murphy claimed that his decision to use the portal at this particular time was solely for his own benefit and had nothing to do with the Longhorns’ program:

It’s not at all directed towards Texas. I’m just doing this for myself and my future. I will always consider myself a Longhorn and a member of this outstanding group.

There was always a chance that the crowded quarterback room would lead Murphy or Manning to choose to use the transfer portal. That Murphy accessed the portal prior to Texas’ appearance in the CFP is surprising, though.
By utilizing the portal now, Murphy will be able to better position himself for his next school by transferring into programs ahead of other quarterbacks. It must be difficult for the 19-year-old athlete to forfeit the opportunity to participate in the CFP, though.

One big reason Texas made the playoffs was because of Murphy. Quinn Ewers battled a shoulder injury, so the redshirt freshman started two of the seven games he played in for Texas. This season, Murphy passed for 477 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions.

Upon graduating from high school, Murphy was a highly sought after recruit. Teams in need of quarterback support on college football teams will be very interested in him.
