Rumors about Rhys Hoskins: The Toronto Blue Jays are showing some interest in the free-agent slugger

After playing for the Philadelphia Phillies for his first seven years of his career, Rhys Hoskins is now a free agent. Hoskins’ market is anticipated to be strong given the lack of elite bats available in free agency, even though he missed the entirety of 2023 due to an ACL tear.

It is unlikely that he will rejoin the Phillies because Bryce Harper has been designated as the team’s starting first baseman going forward.

Dec. 19, Sunday, 5:33 p.m. ET: Ben Nicholson-Smith of the Toronto Blue Jays reports that the team “has some degree of interest” in Hoskins, among other players, for their designated hitter role after missing out on Shohei Ohtani.

Hoskins would presumably be more of a designated hitter for the Mariners with Ty France at first base. But who knows? Jerry DiPoto, president of baseball operations, always seems to have something planned. — Tim Kelly

At 2:12 p.m. ET on Tuesday, December 5, MLB Network’s Jon Morosi reports that the Chicago Cubs are still in contact with the camp of the free-agent slugger. Naturally, the Boras Corporation and super agent Scott Boras represent Hoskins.

Chicago and Hoskins have been linked as a possible pairing throughout the offseason, as this tracker has previously mentioned. According to Morosi, the two parties have talked about possible deals for a year or more. — Ty Daubert
