Texas A&M LB commit with four stars Tyanthony Smith will choose between the Aggies and the Longhorns.

The biggest drama of the day is arguably saved for the 6:30 p.m. on an Early Signing Day when 20 of the 21 Texas Longhorns signees sent in their National Letters of Intent over the course of about two hours. Tyanthony Smith, a Jasper linebacker, made a crucial choice between the Texas A&M Aggies and the Longhorns. The Aggies have had Smith’s commitment since late June.

For head coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff, the obvious need in the 2024 class is at linebacker, where the Longhorns still lack a commitment.

The Longhorns attempted to get Smith to visit them after the Aggies fired Jimbo Fisher last month; one visit is supposedly planned for the regular-season finale against the Red Raiders. However, the trip was canceled, so Texas had to continue scouting the 6’1, 205-pound player in the hopes of convincing A&M to release him.

Even though Jeff Choate, the linebackers coach and co-defensive coordinator, is taking over as Nevada’s head coach, not much has changed in terms of recruiting at the position in the past month, save for the staff’s offer of Magnolia athlete Hunter Andrews, who has since signed with Utah after declining a visit to the Forty Acres.

Similar rumors that Smith would travel to Austin over the weekend before the dead period began broke last week. This was followed by contradictory reports and queries about whether Smith really paid a visit to the Longhorns. Rivals claims that he did, marking Smith’s first visit to Austin since the end of March.

During the time Smith was using social media to tout Texas A&M, four flip picks were entered in the On3 RPM and three more in the 247Sports Crystal Ball. In the final hours before Early Signing Day, Texas has undoubtedly gained popularity.

Smith, a four-star prospect by most accounts, is ranked No. 28 at linebacker and No. 336 overall in the 247Sports Composite rankings.
