‘Mourning the loss of one of our own’: 32-year-old  Nebraska football player killed in single-vehicle crash

Cole Pensick, a former offensive lineman for Nebraska, passed away over the weekend following a single-vehicle accident, the school announced on Sunday. His age was thirty-two.

According to a press release from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, Pensick, a University of Nebraska football player who rose to prominence as a key member of one of the Big Ten’s top rushing teams in 2013, passed away early on Saturday morning after driving his pickup off the road just outside of Columbus.

In a social media statement, Nebraska football said that it was “mourning the loss of one of our own.”

“On behalf of the Nebraska Football program, our deepest condolences go out to the family, friends & teammates of former Husker lineman, Cole Pensick, who passed away yesterday at the age of 32.”

Driving a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado, Pensick “failed to stop at the stop sign” at an intersection, according to the police.

Following its departure from the road, the car “came to rest in some trees.”

Pensick was declared dead at the crash scene, but officers weren’t called until approximately 6:40 a.m.

In the wake of Pensick’s passing, a number of Nebraska football players took to social media.

Pensick was not using a seat belt at the time of the collision, according to the police, and the incident is still being looked into.

During his senior year, Pensick participated in 36 games for Nebraska, making 12 starts and winning the Cletus Fischer Native Son Award.

He was selected to the Second Team All-Big Ten and was named Academic All-Big Ten.
