Leeds United are unlikely to seal the signing of Karl Darlow from Newcastle United this summer, with a move to Bournemouth reportedly closing in.
Leeds have been slow starters in the summer window, but have burst into life this week with the signing of Ethan Ampadu on a permanent deal.
Up next for Leeds, a goalkeeper is likely to be high on the agenda, with The Athletic’s Phil Hay revealing that Newcastle’s Karl Darlow was a key target for the club.
However, that was swiftly followed by claims from the Northern Echo that the goalkeeper would be able to fly back from the Magpies’ US tour to sign for Bournemouth.
It means Leeds need to turn their attention elsewhere, and here we look at two ‘keepers that the club must look at…
Viktor Johansson
Rotherham United stopper Viktor Johansson is someone the club need to be considering after being a core reason for the Millers’ successful survival from relegation last season.
At 24, he’s another with plenty of time to develop into a top ‘keeper and already has 64 Championship appearances to his name with 17 clean sheets.
Football League World reported that the Swede is on the shortlist of targets alongside Darlow, after a really strong season back in the second tier.
With two years left on his deal at Rotherham, he might not come in as a significant outlay, and thus a real value-for-money find.
Which goalkeeper should Leeds sign?
Another linked with a move to Elland Road is Bayern Munich stopper Alexander Nübel, who has spent the last two seasons on loan at Monaco – playing in the 4-2 friendly win against Leeds back in December 2022.
Nübel’s time at Bayern looks to be coming to an end with Leeds prepared to take him permanently for £8.7m, while Stuttgart want him on loan – per Bild.
The German has vast top-flight experience despite being second (or even third) fiddle to Manuel Neuer at Bayern, which stands him in good stead, if he were to move into the Championship with Leeds.
He’s a high-value signing but you’re getting a top-flight ‘keeper for likewise money.
