Boo Stafford of the Detroit Lions will start a pivotal 2024 playoff matchup.

As Matthew Stafford, the quarterback for the Los Angeles Rams, returns to the Detroit Lions for the first time since demanding a trade in 2021, he had a taste of the shift in fan culture. After a protracted period of mediocrity, head coach Dan Campbell made it a point to instill a gritty approach in both the play and persona of Detroit. The “knee-biters” were definitely present before the Detroit-LA game on Sunday night got underway.

When a long-serving quarterback departs from your team, you never know what kind of reception you’ll get on your homecoming. Some quarterbacks have returned to standing ovations based on the circumstances surrounding their departure, but Stafford’s exit from Detroit was undoubtedly not amicable. When Stafford was traded to Los Angeles in 2021, his prolonged cellar dwelling in Detroit finally got to him, and he demanded a trade.

Stafford certainly got the best of that deal as he won a Super Bowl with Los Angeles in his first season but after that, the team has struggled to maintain a consistent roster after they sent such a slew of picks to Detroit. On the other side, Detroit will officially host their former quarterback on Sunday night. Using those draft picks, Detroit has assembled an elite roster.

Stafford was met with a less than cordial reception, as it was evident that some fans still harbor animosity towards him for abandoning the team—and, to be honest, the entire city—three years prior.

Stafford’s 2023 campaign was passable after he discovered Paka Nacua, an up-and-coming star receiver. Detroit has assembled a stronger roster thanks to the utilization of all the draft picks acquired from Los Angeles, as they possess what is arguably the best offensive and defensive line combination in the NFL.

Despite the significant roster turnover, it’s obvious that the supporters won’t be pardoning their former first overall pick following that hostile reception. It is safe to say that this game will be physical given Campbell’s coaching style and the fact that some players will remember the drama during the 2021 offseason. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Detroit pass rush gave Stafford a few extra shots to remind him of what he gave up on.
