In 2024, Hugh Freeze and Auburn’s offensive team are scheduled to play. Here is a picture of the finished item.
Hugh Freeze, the head coach of Auburn, made the first announcement on January 5 that he would not be keeping Philip Montgomery, the offensive coordinator for Auburn during the 2023 season.
But Auburn’s offense would see more staff changes after Montgomery left, as associate head coach and running backs coach Carnell “Cadillac” Williams abruptly announced his resignation on January 11. This forced Freeze to reorganize the Tigers’ offensive coaching staff a little more.
And as of Wednesday afternoon, Freeze has assembled his offensive coaching staff for Auburn’s second season, barring any unforeseen adjustments.
Nix joins The Plains after spending the previous 16 seasons at Ole Miss, where he worked for five of those years under Freeze, the school’s head coach from 2012 to 2016.
Austin was under Freeze’s supervision as Liberty’s co-offensive coordinator and quarterback coach before accepting his off-field position at Auburn last season. Austin also held coaching positions in the Canadian Football League and was Ole Miss’ offensive coordinator for two seasons (2008–09).
Austin played college ball for Ole Miss, where he was the Rebels’ quarterback in the 1980s and is regarded as one of the best passers in the program, ranking behind players like Eli Manning and Bo Wallace.
Auburn also needed a replacement for Cadillac Williams as running backs coach.
Luckily for Auburn, Nix has a successful running back career at Southern Miss and 12 years of experience coaching running backs at Ole Miss.
Nix is the only player from Southern Miss and Conference USA to have rushed for 1,000 or more yards in three seasons. He also became the first Golden Eagle to reach 1,000 yards in rushing in both his freshman and sophomore seasons.
Marcus Davis, the wide receivers coach for Auburn, stayed in his position despite the Tigers’ staff reorganization.
In December 2022, Davis—a former wide receiver for Auburn himself—returned to his alma mater to serve on Freeze’s first Auburn staff. Prior to his comeback to The Plains, Davis held positions as a receivers coach at Florida State, Georgia Southern, and Hawaii.
During his time as an Auburn player from 2013 to 2016, Davis helped the Tigers win the SEC and qualify for the BCS National Championship in his rookie year.
Ben Aigamaua was also hired by Freeze as the tight ends coach at Auburn, where he worked as a member of his first staff. After four seasons as the tight ends coach at Liberty, Aigamaua followed Freeze into the position.
Aigamaua worked as a graduate assistant, offensive analyst, assistant athletic director of community relations, and more during his seven years at Ole Miss prior to joining Liberty. For the first five seasons that Aigamaua spent in Oxford, Freeze served as the head coach at Ole Miss.
