Report: Russell Wilson might end up with the Vikings
Russell Wilson might be a good fit for the Minnesota Vikings if the Broncos release him, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.
Russell Wilson’s interest in the Minnesota Vikings should not come as a surprise if and when he is released by the Broncos, according to ESPN’s NFL insider Jeremy Fowler.
He says he might be taken aback by the Vikings if they decide not to re-sign veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins. Kevin O’Connell, the head coach, comes from a quarterback-friendly lineage that includes Sean McVay. The Vikings are also stocked with weapons, including tight end T.J. Hockenson and wide receivers Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison.
Wilson would be wise to make this move given the Vikings’ system and playmakers. Additionally, Wilson is still regarded by the league as a “mid-tier starter,” according to Fowler, and because the Broncos will be paying Wilson $39 million this season, teams will be able to sign him at essentially veteran minimum. Wilson is unlikely to take much more than the minimum given how things ended in Denver, as any additional amount would only serve to undermine Wilson’s assurances and help the Broncos. Having said that, we won’t lock anything down until we see how that works out.
In addition, Fowler mentions the Atlanta Falcons and the Buccaneers as potential destinations for Wilson in the event of his release, provided they decide not to re-sign Baker Mayfield. He also identifies two sleeper teams: the New England Patriots, who might benefit from adding a rookie and an experienced quarterback this offseason, and the Pittsburgh Steelers, who don’t have a quarterback.
As the Broncos get closer to making a decision regarding Wilson’s future with the team, we should expect more reports and rumors to surface in the upcoming weeks. They will probably release him with a post-June 1st designation, but we’ll see if they can resolve this potentially difficult and costly divorce in any other way, like by making a trade.
