Jacob Steinberg: People within West Ham are very surprised about Conor Gallagher bid claim

West Ham United have had a £37 million plus add-ons bid rejected for Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher.

According to The Guardian journalist Jacob Steinberg, there is some surprise within West Ham that there have been claims a bid totalling £47 million was lodged for Conor Gallagher.

Steinberg has very close contacts with Hammers owner David Sullivan, so what he says has to be taken seriously.

It was claimed yesterday that Gallagher, 23, was placed on the transfer list by Chelsea. However, Chelsea clearly want more than what West Ham are offering…

And David Moyes may well have to look elsewhere now in his search to bring a central midfielder to the London Stadium…

Jacob Steinberg: People within West Ham are very surprised about Conor Gallagher bid claim

The Times claimed yesterday that the Hammers had lodged a £42 million plus £5 million in add-ons bid for the 23-year-old Chelsea star.

Surely Chelsea would accept that kind of offer for a player they have allegedly deemed surplus to requirements?

However, Steinberg has shared how the claim about that bid totalling £47 million just simply isn’t true:

If Moyes really wants Gallagher, West Ham and Chelsea will probably meet somewhere in the middle – around £42-43 million.

The 23-year-old is a very good player but I’m just not sure he’s worth that! He would be a fine addition for the Hammers, but Moyes must ensure that we’re not held to ransom here by Chelsea, because they know we have the funds from the Declan Rice sale.

It will be interesting to see how this one develops over the next few weeks and whether or not West Ham go back in with another bid for Conor Gallagher remains to be seen.
