Titans Finish Coaching Interview With Former Head Coach David Shaw of Stanford
Nashville Throughout part of their Saturday, Tennessee Titans general manager Ran Carthon and owner Amy Adams Strunk advanced the process of replacing former coach Mike Vrabel. David Shaw, the former coach of Stanford, interviewed for the Titans coaching position in Nashville for a portion of Sunday. Shaw did an in-person interview because he was not coaching at the time. The other candidates were hired by NFL teams and were required to interview virtually until January 22. He was the only one to come to the facility for a first-round interview.
In his twelve years at Stanford, Shaw guided the team to a 96-54 record, three Pac-12 Conference championships in four appearances in the championship game, and two Rose Bowl victories in three years. Shaw had an interview with the Los Angeles Chargers on Thursday; the previous season, he had one with the Denver Broncos, which ultimately went to Sean Payton. He worked as an assistant coach for the Ravens, Raiders, and Eagles in the NFL.
Shaw is anticipated to compete for the coaching position with the Titans along with ten other current and former NFL assistants. The following offensive coordinators have had their initial interviews: Dan Quinn of the Cowboys, Mike Kafka of the Giants, Bobby Slowik of the Texans, Aaron Glenn of the Detroit Lions, Mike Macdonald of the Ravens, Thomas Brown of the Panthers, and Bobby Kafka of the Raiders.
Pierce is out of the running because he will supposedly take over as Raiders coach. Ben Johnson, the offensive coordinator for the Lions, is still up for an interview. The following week, Brian Callahan, the offensive coordinator for the Bengals, is expected to be interviewed in person.
Titans Complete Interview With David Shaw, Former Head Coach at Stanford
NASHVILLE: The Titans have concluded their tenth head coaching interview round.
On Sunday afternoon, the team had a face-to-face interview with former Stanford coach David Shaw.
Shaw had interviews with the Chargers on Thursday and the Broncos one year prior to Sean Payton’s hiring.
Shaw was 96-54 in his 12 years at Stanford, where the team won three Pac-12 titles and he was named Coach of the Year four times. After becoming the most successful coach in Stanford history in 2017, Shaw was awarded the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year award. Following two seasons in which he finished with a 3-9 record, Shaw announced his resignation as Stanford’s head coach.
Before assuming the top position at the school, Shaw served as Jim Harbaugh’s assistant.
Additionally, he has experience as an NFL assistant, having served with the Ravens, Raiders, and Eagles.
Shaw refrained from coaching for the entire 2023 campaign.
Prior to this, the Titans conducted interviews with the following candidates for the position: Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, Panthers offensive coordinator Thomas Brown, Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik, Eagles offensive coordinator Brian Johnson, Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka, Raiders interim coach Antonio Pierce, and Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald.
Since Shaw is not under contract, teams are allowed to interview him for a position. In-person interviews with coaches under contract cannot take place until January 22; however, Zoom interviews can take place prior to that date.
