The Las Vegas Raiders are scheduled to interview a concerning applicant for the position of offensive coordinator.

In the sports world, there have been conflicting reactions to the Las Vegas Raiders’ decision to interview Luke Getsy, the former offensive coordinator of the Chicago Bears, for a comparable position on Antonio Pierce’s coaching staff. Getsy had a dismal tenure with the Bears that finally resulted in his firing following the 2023 campaign.

NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero reported on the interview on Tuesday.

When he was in Chicago, the Bears offense was not very successful. Their offensive ranking in 2022 was 28th, and their 2023 ranking only marginally improved to 20th. Getsy and most of the offensive staff were let go by the Bears in 2023, despite a strong finish to the season.

When Getsy was let go earlier this month, Bears head coach Matt Eberflus stated, “I felt the offense needed to grow and develop better than where it was.”

The incapacity of Getsy to modify the offense to quarterback Justin Fields’ advantages was a significant critique leveled at him. Because the play designs of the early season did not present receivers with enough opportunities, Fields was seen as a passer who depended too much on his running ability.

Getsy’s playcalling was generally regarded as too conservative for the Bears offense, despite a few shining moments for Fields and the offense. Fields’ season-long injuries made things more difficult, but even when he was healthy, Luke Getsy’s team struggled against elite teams, raising questions about his potential to turn things around in 2024.

It’s confusing that the Raiders chose to interview Luke Getsy when there have been other more appealing candidates for the position. Those include Zac Robinson, the passing game coordinator and quarterback coach for the Rams, and Kliff Kingsbury, the former head coach of the Arizona Cardinals.

Even though there are misconceptions about his time in Chicago, Getsy has valuable NFL experience. If you’re Antonio Pierce, you should talk to him because of his familiarity with Justin Fields. If Chicago decides to trade the young quarterback before the NFL Draft, the Raiders might be one of several teams interested in acquiring him. Caleb Williams, the standout quarterback from USC, is predicted to be selected by the Bears with the first overall pick.

Report: Bears will speak with several Seahawks assistants

Many other NFL teams are finalizing their coaching staffs while the four playoff-bound teams get ready for their chance to play in the Super Bowl. The Chicago Bears, who recently appointed Shane Waldron as their new offensive coordinator following three seasons in that capacity with the Seattle Seahawks, are among those teams that will have a completely new offensive coaching staff.

As of right now, Waldron is in the field and needs to assemble his own staff. According to a report from CBS’s Jonathan Jones, several members of the Seattle coaching staff are scheduled to interview with the Bears.

Kerry Joseph joined the Seahawks staff in 2020 and has worked as an offensive assistant, assistant wide receivers coach, and assistant quarterbacks coach. Chad Morton has been coaching the running backs for the team since 2015, and he was named run game coordinator in 2022. Last but not least, Sanjay Lal has served as the wide receivers coach and coordinator of the passing game for the previous two seasons.
