The fact that Brian Callahan, the new coach of the Titans, has never called plays—should this worry us?

Do we need to worry?Regarding Brian Callahan, the new coach of the Tennessee Titans, the only criticism I have seen or heard is that during his five years as the offensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals, he never called plays. In Cincinnati, those responsibilities are managed by Bengals head coach Zac Taylor. Even though it’s unclear for sure, it’s safe to assume that Callahan will call the plays in this instance. Does the fact he’s never done it before matter?

Taylor wants you to think that it isn’t really that important. Take a look at this passage from Paul Dehner, Jr. of The Athletic regarding the hiring of Brian Callahan by the Titans: “New Titans coach Brian Callahan has never called plays.”

Taylor remarked, “Those are just people who don’t really know.” Does he have to make plays? Why? No one can truly say that; it’s just a platitude. Here he has served as the coordinator for five years. He organizes all of the related activities. He lays out our offense’s entire framework. He and I are in constant contact on game day. Calling plays is what that is. That constitutes committing a crime. He is aware of all the daily struggles I face in my role as head coach. Both of us, that is. He’s ready for it as well as anyone could be.

We’re not sure how skilled Callahan will be at calling plays at this point because there is no substitute for calling the plays themselves. We do know that he has collaborated closely with some very talented quarterbacks, and his former boss is very appreciative of his contributions. That suffices for me!

Brian Callahan, a former Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator, is the new head coach of the Tennessee Titans. One of the first things that probably came to mind for any NFL fan, whether they were Browns supporters or not, after reading that had to be, “Hmm, does that mean Bill Callahan will follow his son to Tennessee?”

Considered one of the NFL’s top offensive line coaches is Bill Callahan. The Browns’ line interior has been excellent for years, but whenever a starter was hurt, the general consensus was, “Don’t worry, Callahan will coach up the backup and make sure he’s ready.” Over the years, we witnessed it when people like Blake Hance, Michael Dunn, and Dawand Jones had to step in.

While there were still some problems, like a decrease in the run game, Callahan and company managed to keep the line from becoming a complete bust. His name speaks for itself, and he appeared content in Cleveland, declining an interview elsewhere in 2023 to become an offensive coordinator. But as Brad Stainbrook of The OBR notes, dealing with his son is a whole other story:

That suggests that the Browns will keep Callahan in Cleveland, but we’ll keep an eye on things. Given the changes to the offensive coaching staff this offseason, it might not be a good look for Cleveland to turn down Bill if he says he wants to play for his son at this stage of his career. In the event that Callahan leaves the Browns, assistant offensive line coach Scott Peters, who has collaborated with Callahan for the previous four years, may be given more responsibility.
