Unfortunate Injury Update for Detroit Lions Standout Rookie Before NFC Championship Game Against 49ers
In order to get ready for their first-ever NFC Championship game against the top-seeded San Francisco 49ers, the Detroit Lions held their first practice of the week. But after missing practice on Wednesday, Detroit might be without one of their best pass catchers for the game on Sunday.
Sam LaPorta, a rookie tight end who has distinguished himself as one of this explosive offense’s best pass catchers, did not take part in Wednesday’s practice. During the final week of the regular season, LaPorta was injured by a hyperextension and bone bruise to his left knee while playing the Minnesota Vikings.
LaPorta played in both of Detroit’s playoff games thus far, catching 12 passes for 79 yards and a touchdown, despite suffering an injury in the regular season finale. Before the Lions decide on LaPorta’s status and maybe assign him a designation, the player will have two more practices.
The Lions have added Zach Ertz, a veteran, to the roster in light of LaPorta’s multiple knee injuries and backup tight end Brock Wright’s forearm break sustained in Sunday’s victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Over the course of his 12-year career, Ertz—a three-time pro bowler—has caught over 700 balls for 7,434 yards. It is expected that Ertz will be called up from the practice squad on short notice if LaPorta is unable to suit up against San Francisco on Sunday.
Josh Reynolds was another Lions pass catcher to receive an injury designation because of a rib problem. Reynolds has been a dependable downfield option for quarterback Jared Goff and has already caught a touchdown in Detroit’s two playoff games. On Wednesday, he participated in practice only somewhat and will be watched going forward. Due to a knee injury, Kalif Raymond was also not present during practice on Wednesday.
Before facing the 49ers at Levi’s Stadium, Detroit will have two more practices. FOX will start airing coverage of the NFC Championship game this year at 6:30 p.m. Eastern time.
