All-Star Notebook: Ten years too late, Monty and Matthews got together

The hot shot kid from the U.S. Development Program caught the attention of the NCAA when “Monty” was a student at the University of Denver almost ten years ago. Denver, like many others, presented Matthews and his parents with a serious pitch in an attempt to take advantage of the Pioneers’ excellent program and Matthews’ close proximity to his Scottsdale, Arizona, home.

After their combined team won the NHL All-Star Game final, current Boston coach Montgomery remarked, “I could have had him.” “However, he later received a half-million dollar offer.”

He was joking about Matthews’ decision to forgo his education and play a year as a professional in Zurich, Switzerland, which propelled him to prominence in the first round of the 2016 NBA Draft.

It was a breeze to mentor him today. Tell him to go over, please.

Next to celebrity captain Justin Bieber, who deserved all the TV attention for his oversized Marni red polka dot mohair puffer coat, Montgomery felt underdressed.

“We were giggling over it,” stated Matthews. “We suggested that Monty should play for the second period (of the championship game). It’s likely that you could easily identify (Stratford native) Bieber from the crowd if you were seated fairly high in the stands.

Actor and comedian Will Arnett, who was born in Toronto, entertained the media before the games on Saturday by teasing singer Michael Buble, his opponent, for fabricating the go-viral tale that he was high on magic mushrooms during his team’s live TV draft with Quinn Hughes.

Arnett boasted mockingly, “I did a song for the Lego Batman movie.” And I gave a live performance of it at the Oscars. So, Buble, take that.
