A 25-year contract has been signed by the Las Vegas Raiders, who play their home games at Allegiant Stadium, to purchase electricity from this recently installed solar array owned by NV Energy.
According to CEO Doug Cannon, the Super Bowl would be powered by more than 10 megawatts from the solar installation. About 46,000 homes’ worth of energy would be consumed with this amount.
As the stadium was built, sustainability was a top priority, according to Sandra Douglass Morgan, President of the Raiders.
Because the stadium’s roof is composed of a sustainable plastic material, it requires less energy to cool the structure even though it only lets in 10% of the sun’s heat. Rather than employing energy-intensive growing lights, the grass field is moved outdoors on a rail system to receive natural sunlight. Furthermore, everything is composted or transformed into different types of energy, including food scraps, cigarette butts, and grass clippings.

When U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm visited the stadium and examined its main electrical entry room, she brought attention to the Super Bowl’s green energy initiative.
Sometimes, people worry about renewable energy because they don’t know if it will be dependable. Granholm stated, “The fact that a facility like this can be consistently powered by renewable energy should say volumes about what could happen in other communities.”
Massive batteries are housed in the solar farm in addition to powering the current requirements, guaranteeing a five-hour power supply even when the sun isn’t shining. President Biden has set a goal of having 100% clean electricity in the U.S. power grid by 2035, and this technology is seen as essential to achieving that goal.
Super Bowl entertainment, which includes a halftime show with performer Usher, will not be compromised despite the focus on environmental sustainability, according to Cannon. “We have enough power for Usher and all of his lights and all the fanfare that’ll be there,” Cannon said.
