Lockyer signs new contract to stay with Luton

Club captain wants to “build something special” at Kenilworth Road

Luton Town captain Tom Lockyer has signed a new contract with the club.

Lockyer, who made 45 appearances for the promotion-winning Hatters last season, spoke of his delight at extending his stay at Kenilworth Road.

“I’m so happy, I’d really like to build something special here at Luton Town,” he told the club’s official website. “I’ve got an incredible relationship with the fans, the manager, all the boys. I love the club and I love being here.

“It’s incredible what we achieved last season. To have the chance to play with Luton in the Premier League will be something that’s really special to me.”

Lockyer is the third player to agree a new deal to stay with Luton for their Premier League adventure, after Luke Berry and Amari’i Bell.

“This is a really important signing for us,” said manager Rob Edwards. “The supporters saw the best of Tom, and I thought his consistency was second to none – and that’s up there in the whole league.

“He was a huge part of [our promotion], not just the blocks, the clean sheets, the leadership. He even chipped in with goals, and important ones as well, none more so than in the semi-final. There is no question he is a huge signing for us.”

He made a full recovery and has now resumed full training as Luton’s focus turns to their Premier League debut at Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday 12 August.

“It was a really scary moment, we all know that,” added Edwards, “But the main thing is he is OK and ready to crack on with us into the Premier League – and we’re all so happy about that.”
