New Patriots offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt stresses the value of a potent running game.
In an interview with Arbella Early Edition, Phil Perry discusses his impressions of Alex Van Pelt, the Patriots’ new offensive coordinator, and whether or not the trade-offs outweigh the benefits.
Before the 2024 NFL season, the New England Patriots will need to address a number of offensive problems, one of which is reviving the team’s rushing attack.
The Patriots placed 21st in 2022 and 25th in 2023 in terms of rushing yards per attempt after finishing 12th in 2021. Developing a potent run game appears to be among the newly appointed offensive coordinator’s top priorities.
In a video uploaded to the Patriots’ X account, running back Malcolm Van Pelt stated, “I think running the football in this league wins games, wins championships. We have to do that late in the season.” Van Pelt was hired by the Patriots earlier this month following the departure of former offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien. The Browns, under his leadership, ranked fifth in rush yards per attempt in 2020, T-1st in 2021, and 11th in 2022. Last season, the team’s rushing attack was hindered, mainly by the injury to star running back Nick Chubb in Week 2. If Rhamondre Stevenson stays healthy, the Patriots should be able to run the ball efficiently in 2024 with him as the primary running back. In 12 games the previous season, the 2021 fourth-round draft pick ran for 619 yards (4.0 yards per carry) and four touchdowns. He also caught 38 passes for 238 receiving yards. Stevenson’s injury kept him out of the last five games. He has all the drive required for a successful campaign because he is about to enter the last year of his contract in 2024.
Van Pelt also discussed his responsibilities as offensive coordinator and how he can help his players reach their full potential.
“I think a good coordinator does what’s best for his players,” Van Pelt stated. “I believe that many guys have coordinator schemes they are familiar with and understand, but how good of a scheme is it if the player doesn’t fit it?
“A good coordinator will often take the strengths of the players that he has, play to their strengths, while at the same time being able to protect them from their weaknesses.”
