First Call: Patrick Peterson talks about his future in Pittsburgh; former Steelers are on the new coaching staff in Washington

There are some coaching updates involving former Pittsburgh Steelers on Friday’s “First Call.” We talk about Patrick Peterson’s potential tenure on the team. And we examine the next foe of the Penguins.

Frisman Jackson, the former wide receivers coach for the Steelers, has moved on. The Seattle Seahawks are involved. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Hawks are hiring Jackson to start that same position with their team in 2024.

According to a source, Frisman Jackson will be joining the #Seahawks as their wide receivers coach.

Jackson spent the last two seasons as the wideout coach for the #Steelers. In recent years, the WR room leader for the Titans and Panthers has also been the former receiver for the Cleveland Browns.

Jackson had spent the previous two seasons as the wideouts’ coach while working for the Steelers. He has also collaborated with the Carolina Panthers and Tennessee Titans.

D.K. Metcalf, a receiver, is under contract in Seattle through 2025. Jaxon Smith-Njigba is about to start his sophomore year. For two more seasons, Tyler Lockett will be under contract, but his base salary will exceed $15 million annually.

Pittsburgh sway

The Washington Commanders are adding two former Steelers to Dan Quinn’s coaching staff.

Darnell Stapleton, a former offensive lineman for the Steelers, is joining the team as an assistant offensive line coach. Former longtime defensive back for the Steelers Willie Gay will serve as an assistant defensive backs coach.

Stapleton and Gay were both members of the Super Bowl XLIII squad. Prior to purchasing the Commanders, Josh Harris, the team’s owner, owned 5% of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Pat up front?

The future of Patrick Peterson, a defensive back for the Steelers, is uncertain. This season, the 33-year-old cornerback was able to participate in 97% of defensive snaps. However, it’s possible that the Steelers are still searching for an improvement at cornerback to replace Joey Porter Jr.

However, that does not imply that Peterson must be fired. He might still be a valuable nickel or dime back for the team in the role of third cornerback or safety.

Peterson will be paid $9.77 million this year under the Steelers salary cap. In the middle of March, his $3 million roster bonus is due.

In the latest installment of Peterson’s podcast, “All Things Covered,” he stated his desire to pursue his career alongside fellow former Steelers cornerback Bryant McFadden.

Peterson told McFadden to “come on Mac,” when he was asked if he wanted to continue playing. You are aware of my desire. I wonder if the Steelers want me to play for them until the end.”I am aware that you have to go through your assessments for the draft, free agency, and other similar things,” Peterson remarked. However, I was able to adjust to a new environment and play a variety of positions in Year 13. I played 97% of my snaps this season, so I felt like a success.

At the end of the 2023 season, Peterson had 42 tackles and two interceptions.

There will be another team in the building on Sunday as the Penguins retire Jaromir Jagr’s No. 68. The Los Angeles Kings will play.

At the moment, L.A. has 60 points. That and the St. Louis Blues are tied. In the Western Conference, those two clubs are in both wild-card positions. After dropping their last four games and their last seven, the Kings have won three of the last four.

Los Angeles has outscored opponents 10-3 in those three victories. The fact that Los Angeles has 16 road victories is concerning for the Penguins. As of right now, only Vancouver (18) and Dallas (17) have more. The top two teams in the Western Conference are those two teams.

In New Jersey on Thursday, the Kings prevailed 2-1. Byfield Quinton scored

When the two teams played earlier in the season out west, the Penguins prevailed 4-3 in Los Angeles. In overtime, Bryan Rust scored a goal to seal the win. On Saturday afternoon, Los Angeles plays in Boston, and on Sunday night, they visit the Penguins.
