Can JuJu Watkins of USC women’s basketball break Caitlin Clark’s new scoring record?
Caitlin Clark, a six-foot senior sensation guard, set a new record for the Iowa Hawkeyes last night by scoring 49 points, raising her career total to 3,569 points, the highest in women’s college basketball.
She finished the game on Thursday night’s 106-89 victory over the Michigan Wolverines with a total of 49 points, 13 rebounds, and five assists. This is the exact moment when she broke the previous record, which stood at 3,527 career points, set by current Las Vegas Aces All-Star guard Kelsey Plum over 139 games with the Washington Huskies from 2013 to 2017.
Clark has “only” participated in 126 games, and she still has four games left in the regular season to set a new record.
In addition to averaging a league-leading 32.8 points on.475/.399/.857 shooting splits, the Naismith Women’s College Player of the Year favorite is also averaging 8.5 assists, 6.9 rebounds, 1.7 steals, and 0.6 blocks per game this season.
Your USC Trojans’ second-leading scorer in college is on the field. That would be JuJu Watkins, a freshman wing who is also on the Naismith CPFOTY shortlist for this season.
Though it’s far too early to speculate, is there any chance Watkins, who has been an absolute lights-out scorer in her limited collegiate career so far, could surpass Clark in the future?
Any significant run will undoubtedly be influenced by Watkins’s health, but even putting that aside, the 18-4 Trojans’ 27.7 points per game over 21 games (582 total) are one point better than Clark’s 26.6 points in 30 games during her rookie season, 2020–21. However, there are countless other extenuating circumstances that could occur (her teammates’ quality and scoring needs being perhaps the most important), so it’s probably far too early to consider this. Shall we set a time limit until Watkins’s year?

KCRG – IOWA CITY, Iowa In Iowa’s 106-89 victory over Michigan, Caitlin Clark not only set a new school record and Carver-Hawkeye Arena record with her career-high 49 points, but she also became the NCAA women’s all-time scoring leader.
Clark broke the all-time women’s scoring record with a three-pointer in transition after scoring Iowa’s first five points.
After the game, Clark remarked, “You all knew that I was going to shoot a logo three for the record, c’mon now.”
“It was flawless. Head coach of Iowa women’s basketball Lisa Bluder continued, “It was very ideal for her to achieve this record with a logo three.
There were other records that were broken. With a career-high 49 points at the end of the game, Clark eclipsed Megan Gustafson’s school record of 48 points.
“Caitlin Clark is incredibly difficult to stop. It’s really difficult for people to throw different things at her, Bluder said.
She also surpassed Hannah Stuelke’s previous week’s record of 47 points at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
“I was thrilled with her the other night, and I have no problem at all if Hannah goes out there and scores fifty points in the next game. I hope she does that, Clark remarked.
In her 126th career game, Clark scored the eight points needed to break the all-time scoring record—13 fewer than when Kelsey Plum did so. With 3,569 career points to her credit as of right now.
