NFL To Iowa Hog Farmer
As one of the 32 NFL offensive coordinators, Grubb currently occupies one of the most sought-after positions in football coaching. It wasn’t an easy journey to the top, though, as Grubb began working in the family’s hog farming business in 1999 before accepting his first full-time coaching position. He balanced this job with jobs at high school and college until 2007, when he left the family business to work with Kalen DeBoer at Sioux Falls.
Ryan Grubb, a “highly sought after” Washington OC in the offseason, was the subject of a recent ABC story. And how in 2007 Kalen DeBoer offered him $2700 to leave the hog farm and join the USF staff. This is so bizarre to me as a Sioux Fallsian from the DeBoer @USFCougars_ era. tweet.com/pT5unSiVGm

In 2005, Grubb took a job as running backs coach at South Dakota State to start his collegiate coaching career. Grubb joined the University of Sioux Falls as run game coordinator and offensive line coach under Kalen DeBoer in 2006 after being promoted to wide receivers coach. Together, the two would help the Cougars win two NAIA titles between 2007 and 2013. In 2010, Grubb was promoted to offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
In 2014, DeBoer advanced his coaching career to the FBS level when he was named head coach of Eastern Michigan University. Grubb followed him as offensive line coach from 2014 to 2016. After DeBoer moved on to his next position at Fresno State University in 2017, Grubb followed him there. By 2021, he had advanced from assistant head coach to offensive coordinator to quarterbacks coach and coordinator for run games. DeBoer relocated from California to the Pacific Northwest that year and assumed the position of head coach at the University of Washington. Grubb became an assistant head coach, offensive coordinator, and quarterbacks coach for the Huskies. He held these roles for two seasons.
NAIA National Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year, American Football Monthly, 2008
Grubb was a developing assistant for the University of Sioux Falls prior to becoming the mastermind behind the explosive offense of the University of Washington. Grubb was the offensive line coach and coordinator of the run game in addition to being the strength and conditioning coach for the school. 2008 saw the Cougars win their second NAIA championship in program history, and Grubb was named the NAIA Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year by American Football Monthly. 2009 would see the Cougars win their second consecutive championship.
