Huddersfield Town reveal Stoke City right-back Tom Edwards as second summer signing

The 24 year old will spend the season as part of Neil Warnock’s squad after arriving at the John Smith’s Stadium on a season-long loan from their Championship rivals

Tom Edwards has arrived at the John Smith’s Stadium as the Terriers’ second summer signing after agreeing to make a season-long loan move from Stoke City. He will wear the number 16 shirt during his time at the club.

The new arrival helps fill a gap in Neil Warnock’ssquad at right-back with usual first choice Ollie Turton set to miss the first few months of the season with a knee ligament injury he sustained in February.

Huddersfield Town played centre-back Matty Pearson on the right of the back four late last season, and teenager Brodie Spencer has been the only out-and-out full-back option up that side throughout the summer.

Sorba Thomas has played as a wing-back plenty of times for Town but would be unfamiliar with playing further back in a back four, and Edwards’ arrival gives Warnock an experienced option who can lend that tactical flexibility during Turton’s absence.

The 24 year old came through the youth system at Stoke while new Town sporting director Mark Cartwright was in an equivalent role for the Potters and made his senior debut as an 18 year old in a Premier League clash with Manchester City.

Alongside appearing as an England youth international, Edwards established himself in the first team the following season and kept Tommy Smith out of the side for a spell after the former Terriers skipper made the move to the bet365 Stadium.

His promising Stoke career has been hampered by injury, however, and this is Edwards’ fifth loan away from the club after spells at Fleetwood Town, New York Red Bulls (twice) and Barnsley. Edwards spent the first half of the most recent campaign at Oakwell before suffering a season-ending knee injury, from which he has now fully recovered.

stoke City have completed the signing of Mark Travers on loan from Bournemouth for the 2023-24 campaign.

The 24-year-old goalkeeper found himself behind Neto in the pecking order at the Vitality Stadium last season and has been deemed surplus to requirements by new boss Andoni Iraola for the upcoming campaign.

Travers will now spend the season back in the Championship, where he won the Golden Glove and Bournemouth’s Player of the Season award while helping the Cherries to promotion in 2021-22.

This is a great opportunity to test myself in the Championship again and I am pleased to have had the interest from Stoke City,” Travers told the club website upon joining.

“It is a chance for me to play for a great manager at a really exciting time for the club, especially with the new signings that are arriving.

“I have heard good things about the club from players here now – including Ben Pearson and Enda Stevens – and others who have played here before.

“I feel like this is an exciting project and the next step in my career. The season is only just around the corner and I cannot wait to get going.”

Technical Director Ricky Martin added: “For a goalkeeper of his age to have already achieved what he has in the game is rare and remarkable.

“He has featured in international football, played in the Premier League and – perhaps most importantly – was a standout performer when Bournemouth got promoted a couple of seasons ago.

“There was of course a keen interest in Mark from other clubs, so we’re delighted that he’s chosen to come to Stoke City.”

Travers could feature for his new team for the first when they face Everton in a pre-season friendly on Saturday, before the Potters open their Championship campaign at home to Rotherham United the following weekend.
