According to an insider, the 49ers could “fnagle” with the four-time Pro Bowl quarterback.

“Finagle” a way to sign Kirk Cousins this season, since the San Francisco 49ers asked Tom Brady to come out of retirement the previous year.

On February 22, the hosts of “The Mackey & Judd” podcast suggested signing the four-time Pro Bowler and star quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings to a contract that would benefit the team. Although there have been numerous rumours this offseason about Cousins teaming up with 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, the primary roadblock is still the Niners’ $7.41 million salary cap excess.

“For example, if we’re talking about $30 or $40 million annually, that’s something you could easily arrange with a sizable signing bonus. to assist the 49ers and have a low cap hit for 2024, Phil Mackey, the podcast host, stated.

In 2012 and 2013, Shanahan collaborated with Cousins during their time as Washington Redskins players. According to Alec Lewis of The Athletic, Shanahan attempted a trade for Cousins while serving as head coach of the 49ers in 2017.

Should the Niners make a call. Done deal, according to Darren Wolfson of KTSP on the podcast “The Mackey & Judd.” “Now, their cap situation is the biggest problem in the room. In what precise way are they producing the required cap space? Kirk wouldn’t even be trying to spend a fortune to play for Kyle Shanahan, in my opinion.

“We also know what Kyle thinks of Kirk based on comments made in the past several years,” Wolfson continued. Kyle believes that Kirk is the world. I’m stuck in their cap situation. Furthermore, are we certain that Kirk is an improvement over [Brock] Purdy?

Judd Zulgad, the podcast host, agreed with Wolfson that Cousins and the 49ers working together “can’t be completely dismissed” for 2024. “If Kirk is ever going to even get to the Super Bowl, this would be it,” Zulgad said of the 49ers’ circumstances.

According to Mackey, this is a one-year deal that is comparable to the Los Angeles Rams’ disastrous Super Bowl run when they gambled big on quarterback Matthew Stafford. With Purdy starting at quarterback, the 49ers lost to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs 25–22 in the Big Game, narrowly missing out on victory.

Kirk would be cool with that, said Wolfson. Like, it was clearly visible to me. I take it that’s it for Kirk? The ideal circumstances

“Where the Niners stand is what matters to me,” Wolfson continued. What then occurs with Purdy? Is Purdy merely San Francisco’s No. 2 then? How strange would that be?

The Niners QB Carousel May Continue to Rotate
To make sense of it, Mackey recapped the 49ers’ recent quarterback carousel, which included Jimmy Garoppolo, Trey Lance, and Purdy. In that order, the Niners traded a former No. 3 pick, benched a Super Bowl quarterback, and elevated a former Mr. Irrelevant.

According to Mackey, “it’s not logical from what most teams would do.” “They [49ers management] have demonstrated that they can quickly cut off very good or highly drafted quarterbacks if they believe they have already explored every option for developing this quarterback.”

Additionally, Zulgad hinted that if Cousins signs a two-season contract, he believes the 49ers would trade Purdy. Though the team would retain a Super Bowl quarterback as a backup, the hosts conjectured that the 49ers might select Purdy in the first round of the draft.
