Tottenham have bid rejected for £21m defender who just played ‘worst match of his life’

Tottenham Hotspur have had a bid rejected for Galatasaray centre-back Victor Nelsson.

That’s according to a report from the Turkish outlet Sabah which shares more details about the Danish international’s future.

Tottenham appear to be exploring plenty of options to fix their defensive issues.

The club have been linked with several centre-backs, but so far none have arrived at the club.

Tottenham’s need for new defenders was highlighted in their friendly against Lion City Sailors yesterday.

Ben Davies played alongside Cristian Romero but made the mistake that gifted the hosts their first goal.

The Welsh international is typically a left-back or left-sided centre-half but is unfamiliar with playing as a centre-back in a back four.

One of the players Tottenham have been linked with his summer is Victor Nelsson.

The 24-year-old helped Galatasaray win the league last season but has his heart set on a move to the Premier League.

Tottenham have reportedly offered him this chance, but the Turkish giants haven’t received a sufficient bid for him yet.

The report from Sabah simply says that Tottenham’s bid wasn’t accepted without saying how much they offered.

Galatasaray are holding out for around £21m for the Danish international but would accept an offer for £17.1m.

They reiterate that Nelsson is desperate to play in the Premier League and that desire might be affecting his performances.

Manager Okan Buruk said after Galatasaray’s 2-2 draw with Zalgiris in the Champions League that Nelsson played ‘the worst match of his life’.

The 24-year-old is a right-footed centre-back that, like fellow target Edmond Tapsoba, prefers to play on the left.

He’s confident in possession and an impressive aerial force but does have the odd lapse in concentration.

Tottenham will have to consider whether to make another offer for Nelsson after having their latest bid rejected.

They have so many options on the table that they might look elsewhere before returning for the Dane.

How will Tottenham line up with new signing Manor Solomon? Winger joins on five-year deal

Tottenham Hotspur completed their fifth signing of the summer transfer window on Tuesday, when the North London club confirmed the signing of Manor Solomon from Shakhtar Donetsk on a free transfer. The 23-year-old talent makes the move to Spurs after agreeing to a five-year deal and will surely play an important role in Ange Postecoglou’s squad for the 2023/23 Premier League season.

Following high-profile moves for James Maddison and Guglielmo Vicario, as well as confirming permanent deals for Dejan Kulusevski and Pedro Porro, Solomon joins Tottenham as something of a low-key transfer considering the lack of a big-money fee for the forward. But there should be little doubt over how important he could prove to be for the club going forward.

How good is Manor Solomon?

Solomon initially made his name for Maccabi Petah Tikva, before moving to Shakhtar in January 2019 for €6m. At the Ukrainian club, the left winger bagged 22 goals and nine assists in 106 games, before making a loan move to Fulham in July 2022. And it was at the London club that Tottenham likely took interest in a young winger that took to the Premier League like a duck to water.

Indeed, despite missing the first half of last season due to knee surgery, Solomon bounced back in January and impressed in the second half of the Premier League campaign with four goals in 19 appearances. However, when we break that down to contributions per game it works out at 0.64 goals per 90 minutes. When we open that out to all competitions it comes in at 0.55 goals per 90, which is a very impressive return for a Fulham winger indeed. And exactly why Spurs have now signed him.

Where will Manor Solomon fit into Tottenham’s team?

At first, the signing of Solomon may seem slightly odd considering the fact that Tottenham already have an excellent left-sided forward in the form of Heung-min Son. But in practice, the newly-acquired winger should be able to provide a huge amount of support and cover for the South Korea international, who certainly looked jaded and over-played towards the end of the 22/23 season. As well as Kulusevski on the right wing.

Indeed, while Solomon was played exclusively as a left winger for Fulham, his time at Shakhtar saw him play on the right wing in 28% of his games and at Maccabi Petah Tikva he was far more prevalent on the right wing. As such, the young winger is perfectly capable of filling in for both first-choice wide forward if and when called upon. Which could solve a huge problem for Postecoglou ahead of his first season at the club.
