Boston — The Red Sox called up Romy Gonzalez ahead of their home opener this week in the hopes that he could help stabilize the infield due to Trevor Story’s injury.
Given the Red Sox’s recent string of injuries, it’s unclear if Gonzalez will even be available to them in the near future.
Gonzalez sustained an injury during Wednesday night’s loss, and he was visible wearing a brace on his left wrist on Thursday. Gonzalez was scheduled to start Thursday night at Fenway Park in Boston’s series finale against the Baltimore Orioles, but he will receive X-rays instead.
Before the Red Sox took on the Orioles, manager Alex Cora stated, “He woke up this morning sore.” It was when he was pushing himself up in that play. He woke up this morning feeling the same way he felt yesterday—that is, without any sense of what was going on. We’ll assess our current state. We had to scratch him since he was truly playing third.
Cora wasn’t sure if Gonzalez needed to be out of commission for a while. With the Red Sox, he appeared in just two games and managed just one hit in four at-bats. During the first seven games of the season, he was batting.321 with three home runs and ten RBIs for Triple-A Worcester.
Gonzalez is the most recent Red Sox player to sustain an injury. Since Trevor Story will need shoulder surgery, his season is already over. Nick Pivetta is presently on a 15-day intermission because of a strain in his right elbow flexor. Pivetta may be joined there by Rafael Devers, who is recovering from a bothersome shoulder injury.
With Story sidelined, Gonzalez was expected to offer a response to Boston’s infield concerns. However, if he is absent for a long time, Cora will have to pick up the pieces and figure out another solution.
