Former Michigan linebacker has been contacted by Michigan State football via the transfer portal.

The transfer portal officially opened on Tuesday, which means that Michigan State football fans can expect an extremely exciting offseason. The Spartans, who themselves need to bring in a lot of talent, will need to move quickly to decide which transfers to pursue and to enroll as many of them as possible.

This spring, Jonathan Smith and his staff are reportedly hard at work on that, having already contacted a transfer linebacker through the portal.

Nikhai Hill-Green is a transfer from Charlotte who plays junior linebacker. He only played for Charlotte for one season, but it was a very successful one. He recorded 73 tackles, two sacks, and one forced fumble in the previous campaign.

He spent his first two seasons as a player with the Michigan Wolverines prior to joining Charlotte. Out of high school, he committed to the Michigan Wolverines, where he was rated as a four-star recruit and ranked as the nation’s 23rd outside linebacker. He was therefore a tremendous asset to Michigan’s recruiting class, but his stay in Ann Arbor was short-lived.

Despite not playing much as a freshman for the Wolverines, he recorded 50 tackles in a respectable sophomore campaign. That season was the one when he transferred.

On3 reporter Phillip Dukes claims that five universities have gotten in touch with Hill-Green since using the portal, including Michigan State. Remarkably, Michigan is among the other universities that got in touch with him, barely a year after he dropped out of their program. I don’t know if their relationship ended amicably, but it does seem a bit unrealistic to me that they would get back together.

The other three universities that have contacted Hill-Green thus far are Florida State, Arkansas, and Colorado. It’s obvious from these names alone that this will be a difficult recruitment to get in. However, Smith has demonstrated that by bringing in ten transfers during the fall/winter portal period.

Hill-Green would be a fantastic addition to the MSU team because he would give the Spartans the much-needed depth they require. Hopefully, Smith can perform his magic once more, defeating these other elite universities and landing another transfer portal recruit.
