The quarterback for Virginia Tech highlights multiple Hokies who accessed the transfer portal on Wednesday.

It was, after all, just a matter of time.

On Wednesday, three football players from Virginia Tech entered the transfer portal, and one of their names might come as a surprise. Three Hokies have accessed the portal, including quarterback Dylan Wittke, who faced off against Pop Watson this spring for the backup position behind Kyron Drones next fall.

In all honesty, head coach Brent Pry may have anticipated this since, following the Spring Game on Saturday, he indicated that Virginia Tech may be searching the portal for a backup signal caller. Overall, it’s not surprising to see Wittke because, as he also stated, Watson has the inside track to support Drones in the fall.

In the spring game, Watson appeared to be the better quarterback of the two because he received most of the reps right away while Wittke covered Drones and entered the game in the second quarter. With Drones and Watson on the depth chart heading into the fall, expect Pry and offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen to spend the next few weeks searching the portal extensively for a backup quarterback.

Running back Tralon Mitchell and offensive lineman Gabriel Arena, a safety reserve, as well as two more offensive players, entered the Hokies’ portal. In the Military Bowl game against University of Tulane the previous season, Mitchell only had one carry. Security Antonio Cotman went through the portal as well.

With the emphasis now shifting to the offensive line and another quarterback, it is evident that Pry and his staff still have work to do in terms of adding to the roster. This portal is a small window that closes on April 30. If they learned anything from last year, it’s the necessity of depth under center and along the offensive line.
