Michigan Football: The 2024 starting quarterback for the Wolverines is

Our first look at the Michigan football roster for the 2024 season was during the 2024 Spring Game. To be honest, the Spring Game didn’t show us much; the starters played a few possessions and then rested, giving the backups ample opportunity to gain valuable experience. The quarterback competition was the main attraction at the Spring Game, though.

Due to injury, Jack Tuttle was unable to play, but the other quarterbacks on the team competed fiercely to establish themselves as the starting quarterback. Alex Orji and Davis Warren seem to be the only two left in the competition.

It looks like Michigan will continue with what they have at this point. Although they might search the portal for a backup, it appears highly improbable that Michigan football will locate a starter there. That might alter, though, if an unexpected player uses the portal—though it doesn’t seem likely right now.

Who then gets to start? I’m betting on Alex Orji. Indeed, Davis Warren had an outstanding Spring Game. He wasn’t even close to the top of the depth chart when he did that the previous year. There’s no doubting Alex Orji’s potential, but Warren is currently a more accurate passer.

Why starting Alex Orji for Michigan football makes sense

Orji didn’t have any awful misses on Saturday, despite finding it difficult to make the difficult throws. He also failed to showcase his greatest asset, which is his physicality and running prowess. Play should not be stopped when the quarterback is touched because Alex Orji will break a lot of tackles.

Take the blue team’s last drive, for instance. I doubt anyone truly believes Orji would have gone down on that fourth down, which was called a sack because he was touched. A touchdown would have been scored. Orji managed a nice 18-yard rushing touchdown on the game’s opening drive despite the rules.

Orji just needs to work on his accuracy and mechanics at this moment. He has the arm talent to throw the ball anywhere on the field. However, it’s evident that he has potential similar to Jalen Milroe. Orji will have the support of his teammates to succeed, as the team features a strong running back room and what should be the best defense in the country.

Yes, as they have for the previous three years, teams will probably stack the box against Michigan. In order to win games, Orji will need to make throws. However, there are certain things you can’t teach in football and other things you can. Accuracy is something you can teach. The physical advantages Alex Orji possesses are unteachable.
