In a pregame deal that was agreed upon on Saturday afternoon, the Boston Red Sox acquired Garrett Cooper from the Chicago Cubs, giving the team some much-needed depth at first base.
Following their crushing 17-0 victory over the Cubs, the Red Sox announced that they had placed first baseman Triston Casas on the 60-day injured list in a corresponding move to help make room on the roster. Casas was initially listed as injured with little information; however, a fractured cartilage has kept the 24-year-old out of action, and he won’t be able to play again until June.
Meanwhile, Cooper can still make an impact, as Chicago designated the eight-year veteran for assignment.
According to Christopher Smith of MassLive, Red Sox manager Alex Cora stated of Cooper, “Obviously it’s a guy that he can put a good at-bat.” Both lefties and righties can be hit by him. He is a capable backer. Thus, we’ll have a seat and discuss our plan of action. We firmly think he will assist us.
Cooper, 33, is a career hitter who is a hitter for.268/.337/.435 but left the Cubs after just 12 games this season.
270 with six RBIs and one home run. Boston will need Cooper to step in while Casas is still recovering, especially defensively because it will be difficult to replace Casas’ bat.
Recently, injuries have cast a shadow over Boston, as they have lost Garrett Whitlock, Isaiah Campbell, Brayan Bello, Romy Gonzalez, and Nick Pivetta in the last four days alone.
