The Seattle Seahawks acquired a gifted undrafted free agent that the other NFL teams neglected to select.
The NFL Draft of 2024 has concluded, but a number of undrafted free agents are still looking for a position in the league. Over the past few days, a large number have already signed with teams. Others have been invited to rookie camps by different teams in an attempt to establish their worth and secure a contract.
Nelson Ceaser, EDGE Houston, is one of the most gifted undrafted free agents signed this week and stands out above the rest. He was immediately signed by general manager John Schneider and the Seahawks to a contract that included a $100,000 guaranteed bonus in addition to a $10,000 signing bonus after the draft.
Nelson Ceaser chose to stay five years at Houston in a time when it is far too simple to transfer as a gifted edge rusher. Over his career, the 6’3, 254-pound edge rusher, who just finished a season with 10 sacks, averaged a pass rush pressure rate of almost 13%. He proved to be a disruptive force off the edge each and every season.
Additionally, even though Ceaser had a somewhat easier schedule during his time in college, he frequently performed at his best against elite opponents. He recorded six sacks and twenty pressures in the previous season while facing Big 12 opponents. He recorded nine pressures in a single game against an 11-3 UTSA squad the previous season.
He didn’t let anyone down.
There are a few edge rushers with excellent raw physical attributes and skill on the Seattle Seahawks, but only one last season—Boye Mafe—was able to pressure opposing quarterbacks on even 10% of his pass rush attempts. A year ago, the Seahawks experimented with a five-man rotation of edge rushers, but none of them could reliably apply pressure outside of Mafe.https:
Given the Seahawks’ desperate need for additional pressure off the edge, Nelson Ceaser could very well make his way into the starting lineup this autumn. As the team’s number five or six pass rusher, Ceaser most likely splits reps with the third team during training camp. However, if he shows promise this summer, he could move up the ladder quickly.
