MN: Consistency is key to everything as Tonali continues to grow at Milan

Report: Newcastle’s interest in £43m star is ‘concrete’, willing to pay him around £150k-a-week

Newcastle United clearly fancy an Italian, and have followed up their Nicolo Barella approach with a move for Sandro Tonali.

The Magpies are currently looking to sign a marquee midfielder, and shocked the world with a move for Barella last week. However, it looks like a deal for the Inter Milan star is unlikely due to the Serie A giants wanting nearer £80million for the 26-year-old.

That is forcing Newcastle to look elsewhere, but they haven’t actually had to look too far away. Now the Toon radar is pointing at Inter’s rivals AC, and another Italy international in Sandro Tonali.

He was linked with the Magpies recently as a potential midfield option, and now Newcastle have made their move.

The Athletic reported on Tuesday night that Newcastle have offered £43million for the 23-year-old. Now Italian outlet Milan News have provided an update on Dan Ashworth’s approach for the man likened to Andrea Pirlo.

Newcastle prepared to double Sandro Tonali’s wages

According to Milan News, Newcastle’s interest in Tonali is ‘concrete’. They state that Howe’s side are willing to offer him a huge pay rise, doubling his currently salary at AC Milan.

It has been reported that he earns around £75,000-a-week at the San Siro, which would mean a move to Tyneside could see him receive as much as £150,000-a-week.

That would make him Newcastle’s highest earner – although that could change pretty soon amid speculation that Bruno Guimaraes is going to sign a new contract at St James’ Park worth £200,000-a-week.

But the huge increase in wages could incentivise Tonali to swap Milan for Newcastle, and the report from Italy adds that he will only be sold if he expresses a desire to leave.

Hopefully that happens, as Tonali is a very exciting target, and someone who would be just as impactful as Barella in a black and white shirt. As Newcastle prepare to compete in the Champions League, it is clear that Howe wants elite reinforcements. In Tonali, he would get exactly that.
