There will be another window for free agents and loan players this summer, as has been customary for Reading in recent years, with the club initially going under embargo in 2020.

With concerns about potential takeover, Ruben Selles, still without a salary budget, had a good debut season with mostly Academy graduates, placing 17th in League One.

Look below at four players who were cut by other third-tier teams and who could be useful in Berkshire come season.

With over 200 appearances for Portsmouth over the last five years, the 30-year-old center defender has a wealth of experience and was a crucial member of the Pompey team that won League One.

The former Norwich City defender, who made 44 appearances en route to winning the championship, has been let go because it appears that he is not in John Mousinho’s plans for the Championship.

Raggett, who is still very much one of the top players in the third tier, could give Reading, an extremely young team, much-needed experience and knowledge at the age of thirty.

With the exception of a four-year Championship stint with Preston North End and two League Two seasons with Rochdale, the right-back is primarily a League One regular and is well-versed in the division.

The 30-year-old has played in 39 of Pompey’s 46 third-tier games and still has a lot of talent to offer.

Given the dearth of full-backs in the lineup, Rafferty and Yiadom would be excellent starting options on the wings.

The 28-year-old, who helped the Tractor Boys return to the Championship in 2023, was a highly regarded full-back with Colchester United and Ipswich Town. Given his injury status, he might be a left-field option.

Due to recurrent injuries, the London player joined Wycombe Wanderers in the summer and played in 18 games before missing time in February.

Keeping up his rehabilitation with the Chairboys is something he should consider when he’s fully recovered.
