After suffering a severe neck injury in a goalpost collision, Finnish star Sanni Hakala has a long road to recovery ahead.

While details remain scarce on her injury, according to HV71, Sanni Hakala’s club in the SDHL, the Finnish star is facing a long road to recovery after a scary injury.

Facing Djurgardens on Friday, Hakala collided with the goalpost injuring her neck. The game was cancelled after Hakala was removed from the ice by stretcher, and taken by ambulance to hospital for an emergency surgery.

According to her club, HV71, who Halaka has captained this season and last year, recording 13 points in 16 games this season prior to her injury, Hakala has a long road to recovery ahead.

“Sanni Hakala was transferred from Ryhov County Hospital to the University Hospital in Linköping on Friday evening and underwent surgery there on Saturday for the neck injuries she received after the accident,” HV71 said in a statement. “The surgeons at the hospital announce that the operation went well and that a long period of rehabilitation awaits Sanni, something she now needs to focus on in peace and quiet.”

Hakala has won two Olympic bronze, two World Championship bronze, and a World Championship silver medal representing Finland at international competitions.

Playing for JYP in Finland, the 26-year-old transferred to HV71 during the 2016-2017 season and has played for HV71 since.
