Red Sox player Jarren Duran penalized 2 games after calling supporter a homophobic slur

Following Duran’s statement being recorded on a live broadcast from Fenway Park on Sunday, the team and Major League Baseball announced the ban.

Jarren Duran, an outfielder for the Boston Red Sox, was caught on camera calling a fan a homophobic slur during an outburst during Sunday’s game against the Houston Astros. As a result, he was suspended for two games by Major League Baseball and the Red Sox, effective immediately. Duran’s prorated salary for the suspended game days will be donated to PFLAG (Federation of Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays), MLB and the team released a joint statement.

Following the Boston Red Sox’s 10-2 loss, Duran apologized for his reaction, calling the word “truly horrific” and stating that he plans to learn from the incident. “I feel awful knowing how many people I offended and disappointed,” Duran said. “I apologize to the entire Red Sox organization, but more importantly to the LGBTQ community. Our young fans are supposed to be able to look up to me as a role model, but tonight I fell far short of that responsibility.” The team repeated Duran’s remarks, adding that the slur does not represent the organization.

The Red Sox will play the Rangers as part of a three-game set on back-to-back evenings at Fenway Park, so Duran will also have to sit out Tuesday’s battle. Until Monday night, Duran, a 2024 All-Star, had started every game this season.
