Injuries & Moves: LeMahieu scratched after BP mishap; Jazz activated

Aug. 23: INF DJ LeMahieu scratched from lineup
LeMahieu was a late scratch from Friday’s lineup against the Rockies for what the Yankees said were “precautionary reasons.” LeMahieu sustained a facial contusion after being hit on the right side of his face with a thrown ball during batting practice. He was replaced at first base by Ben Rice.

Aug. 23: INF/OF Jazz Chisholm Jr. reinstated from 10-day IL
Chisholm was reinstated from the injured list prior to Friday’s game against the Rockies, a day after infielder Oswald Peraza was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre following the Yanks’ 6-0 victory over the Guardians.

Chisholm said he has experienced no pain since sustaining a sprain of his left ulnar collateral ligament on an Aug. 12 slide into home plate against the White Sox. In his first 14 games as a Yankee, Chisholm batted .316 (18-for-57) with seven homers and 11 RBIs.

“It’s no secret how well he’s played for us since he’s come over,” manager Aaron Boone said. “It was a scary situation there in Chicago initially, but he’s responded great. He’s been champing at the bit all week to get back in there.

RHP Ian Hamilton (right lat strain)
Expected return: September
Hamilton is scheduled to begin a Minor League rehab assignment with Double-A Somerset on Aug. 23. He faced hitters on the field at Yankee Stadium on Aug. 20, tossing two innings of live batting practice. Hamilton is recovering from a lat injury sustained on June 16. Gil exited an Aug. 20 start against Cleveland with lower back discomfort. He was re-evaluated on Aug. 21 and placed on the 15-day injured list, though manager Aaron Boone characterized the injury as “minor.” The Yankees hope to keep Gil active with bullpen sessions and possibly live batting practice before he is activated. Rizzo has also been fielding grounders and throwing, and he is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Somerset the weekend of Aug. 23.

Rizzo will DH for about a week before mixing in first base work. Yankees manager Aaron Boone said that Rizzo would DH on Aug. 23 and 24, have a day off on Aug. 25, then DH two more games before returning to New York and beginning to work at first base.
