Packers reach out to free-agent QB Ryan Tannehill following Jordan Love’s injury: Sources

One day after the Green Bay Packers starting quarterback Jordan Love was diagnosed with a sprained MCL, the team reached out to free agent Ryan Tannehill, per league sources. There is no deal in place currently.

Tannehill, who spent the past five seasons with the Tennesee Titans, hit free agency this past offseason after his deal with Tennesee expired. The 36-year-old was injured and replaced as starter by Will Levis in 2023.

Tannehill told The Athletic’s Diana Russini on an episode of Scoop City in July that he for him to join a team, “it would have to be the right situation.”

The Packers are looking for quarterback help after Love’s injury, which occurred in the final seconds of the team’s Friday night loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

In the 34-29 loss, Love went 17-of-34 passing for 260 yards with two touchdowns and one interception, which was his first start since signing a four-year, $220 million extension in July. The deal made Love the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL, a mark since surpassed be Dak Prescott’s new deal with the Dallas Cowboys, signed earlier Sunday.

On Friday, Love was replaced for the final two plays by Malik Willis, who was one of Tannehill’s backups in Tennessee. In 12 career appearances, Willis has thrown for 350 yards and no touchdowns with three interceptions.

In eight starts and 10 appearances with the Titans in 2023, Tannehill tossed for 1,616 yards and four touchdowns with seven interceptions while completing 64.8 percent of his passes, his lowest mark since arriving in Tennesee. He spent the first seven years of his career with the Miami Dolphins, who drafted him No. 8 in the 2012 NFL Draft.
