Troy Deeney blown away by ‘huge’ West Ham player after 4-1 win vs Ipswich Town
West Ham secured only their second Premier League win of the season on Saturday with a huge 4-1 result against Ipswich Town.
With Julen Lopetegui already feeling the pressure after being appointed this summer, the Irons bagged a superb win against the Tractor Boys, who since returning to the English top-flight have impressed under Mark McKenna.
The international break has come at an awkward time for West Ham with the Hammers next facing London rivals Tottenham in a game that could be pivotal for Lopetegui and his future and the London Stadium.
Yet the form of one West Ham player could be enough to spur the Irons forward as noted by Troy Deeney.
Deeney lauds Jarrod Bowen after West Ham win vs Ipswich
Writing for BBC Sport, the pundit highlighted West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen as the key reason why the east London side were so impressive against Ipswich, with the winger in top form on the day.
A goal and an assist was needed for Bowen, who has started the new season in slow form after an incredible 2023/24 under David Moyes, yet the 27-year-old showed against Ipswich why he’s one of the best wingers in the Premier League.
And Deeney was impressed with what he saw from the England international on Saturday, with the former Watford striker saying about Bowen’s performance: “A huge game not only for West Ham but also for Bowen.
“The manager was under pressure and he had to deliver as captain – that’s exactly what he did with an assist and a goal. He was a threat all game against an Ipswich team that have been very good all season and he made them look bang average.”
West Ham need Bowen at his best if they’re to climb up the table
After an impressive summer of spending following the appointment of Lopetegui, it’s been a rough start to the season for West Ham, who are yet to live up to the promise many expected from the Irons.
Yet with Bowen’s form yet to pick up, the winger returning to his best will be key in West Ham picking up wins and climbing back up the Premier League standings, where a European finish is still the dream for the Hammers.
Indeed, West Ham’s success in recent years is directly linked to Bowen being on song for the east London side, and the Irons will want to see the former Hull City star back at his best after the international break, with Tottenham around the corner.
