4 Commanders offseason departures who should thrive on new teams in 2024
Which Washington Commanders departures throughout a busy offseason should thrive on their new teams during the 2024 campaign?
Adam Peters wasted little time molding a roster he believes can be more competitive. To nobody’s surprise, the Washington Commanders were one of the league’s most active teams in free agency. Of course, this was always going to come with collateral damage attached.
It’s clear from the new general manager’s actions that he didn’t think much of the roster Ron Rivera built. Very few were re-signed. Almost every established star was allowed to leave without much of a fight. After four straight losing campaigns under the previous head coach, a complete refresh was the only way this torrid situation had a chance of improving.
Whether this bold move pays off remains to be seen. As for those who’ve departed? There are more than a few who could potentially make a big impression elsewhere if their respective transitions go according to plan.
With this in mind, here are four Commanders players who could thrive on new teams when the 2024 season arrives.
Antonio Gibson – Former Commanders RB
After the Washington Commanders signed Austin Ekeler to a two-year deal, it all but sealed Antonio Gibson’s fate. The running back dropped to No. 2 on the depth chart behind Brian Robinson Jr. last season. Those in power believed that the productive veteran represented a better option than handing their former third-round selection a new contract.
Gibson wasn’t out of work long, signing a three-year, $11.25 million deal with the New England Patriots. He’ll likely become their pass-catching specialist out of the backfield thanks to Rhamondre Stevenson’s presence. That said, this looks like a potentially productive tandem for either ex-Commanders quarterback Jacoby Brissett or a new rookie signal-caller to lean on next season.
A fresh start was the best possible solution for all parties in this scenario. The Commanders got one of the league’s best red-zone running back threats on a cost-effective agreement and Gibson gets an opportunity to reinvigorate himself as part of Jerod Mayo’s new regime.
