Mateo Joseph thanks Leeds United player and admits he was desperate to get on against Sheffield United

Leeds United secured a fantastic 2-0 win over Sheffield United at Elland Road on Friday night and it was Mateo Joseph who secured The Whites’ second to win all three points.

Leeds went into the game with a midfield crisis, many players returning on Thursday from international duty and off the back of a disappointing draw against Sunderland when it should have been a win.

Sheffield United meanwhile, had won five of their last six games and not conceded a goal since August. Indeed, the Blades started quickly and looked as though they might silence the Elland Road crowd.

But, Leeds improved as the game went on with Largie Ramazani hitting the woodwork. An unlikely source though, proved to be decisive as Leeds opened the scoring from a corner, the first time since February.

Joe Rothwell was superb again for Leeds in midfield and his low corner was superbly turned into the back of the net by Pascal Struijk. Towards the end of the game, substitute Mateo Joseph got on the score sheet.

Just his second goal for Leeds this season, but his sixth for club and country after a goal in September and a hat-trick last week for Spain’s U21 side, Joseph finished a superb through ball from Leeds ace Piroe.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Joseph said: “I feel great, scoring and helping the team to win three points. It is just a reward for doing all the work I do. Great, great pass. He can play as a striker, he can play 10.

“Thank you Joel, thank you! I was desperate to get on, but really happy for this last week and I will keep working hard,” Joseph added, elated at getting his name on the score sheet for a second time this term.

A penny for Patrick Bamford’s thoughts on Friday night…

Earlier this month, Bamford spoke about how he wanted to leave Leeds. It came after his missed penalty against Newcastle shortly before relegation, when fans waited outside his house to confront the striker.

Daniel Farke has the benefit of two very in-form strikers in Joseph and Piroe, and with his system only really allowing one of those to start, the chances are that Bamford is not going to get more game time.

By January, and with Bamford previously admitting he has wanted to leave, surely he could consider an exit? For Joe Gelhardt, a January loan already seems like an inevitability with Gelhardt omitted again.
