Defender Aaron Donnelly has returned to Nottingham Forest after suffering an injury blow early in his loan spell.

The youngster was due to spend the season north of the border with Dundee after making the move last month. However, his stint at Dens Park has been temporarily halted.

Donnelly damaged ankle ligaments in training and is facing a spell on the sidelines. He has returned to the Reds for treatment, with the Daily Record quoting Dees boss Tony Docherty as saying the 20-year-old “will be out for a while”.

Donnelly is highly regarded at the City Ground. He earned praise from head coach Steve Cooper after he made his Forest debut in last term’s Carabao Cup victory at Grimsby Town.

A successful loan to Port Vale followed, with Donnelly joining the club in January and going on to make 20 appearances. He capped a memorable campaign with his first senior international call-up for Northern Ireland, having already represented his country at Under-21 level.

“I am hoping to get as many first-team minutes as possible this season,” Donnelly said after putting pen to paper for Dundee. “I was on loan at Port Vale from January until the end of the season and I am now looking forward to getting a full season under my belt.

“For me, it is all about delivering week in week out and being consistent. I feel Port Vale has given me a platform to push on and now that I have signed for Dundee I feel like it is about pushing on even more and showing the fans what I can do.”

Donnelly had turned down interest from elsewhere to make the switch. And Docherty said at the time: “The move has come through our recruitment team and the relationship I have with Nottingham Forest and I am delighted to get the move over the line. I am really pleased Aaron chose us as he did have three other suitors down in England and he chose to come to Dundee after conversations with us and coming up to see the facilities. I am hugely encouraged to get him here and he is an exciting young player, a good defender and he is held in high regard.”
