Flynn Downes to Southampton latest after West Ham man’s illness delays move
West Ham midfielder Flynn Downes will undergo his Southampton medical on Monday, reports Football Insider.
Downes to Southampton has been in the pipelines throughout August. It comes after James Ward-Prowse headed the other way, further pushing Downes down the pecking order in East London.
And it looked like the midfielder was set to reunite with former Swansea City boss Russell Martin at Southampton sooner, but for illness delaying the move.
Now though, Football Insider say that Southampton have agreed a deal to bring in Downes and that the 24-year-old will undergo a medical on Monday, with the move set to be complete in the next 24 to 48 hours.
Downes looks set to become the Saints’ fourth summer signing, joining the likes of Joe Lumley, Shea Charles, and Ryan Manning in signing for the club.
Downes to Southampton
Southampton have started the seaosn strongly. But the Saints are yet to keep a clean sheet, conceding four at home to Norwich City earlier in the month, and so there’s definite room for improvement.
And a player like Downes; a steely midfielder who can put in a tackle and who has proven pedigree playing in a Martin side, looks like a very good potential signing for the Saints.
The move has been a while in the making and after some unexpected delays, it looks like Downes is finally closing in on his temporary move to the south coast.
There’s now less than two weeks left of the transfer window and with Southampton having overseen some big player sales this summer, the club could yet make a few last minute signings in their bid for promotion from the Championship.
Up next for the club is a home game v QPR next weekend.
