Wilfried Gnonto celebrates after Leeds United won the Championship title

Wilfried Gnonto shares perfect seven-word message after Leeds United request.

Leeds United celebrated their promotion to the Premier League and Championship title on Monday with an open-top bus parade through the city.

At the start of the 2023/24 campaign, Gnonto’s future was thrown into doubt as it was reported he refused to travel to Birmingham City at the beginning of the Championship season. It was deemed by many that the forward was reluctant to play in the second tier.

A formal transfer request then followed and it seemed Gnonto was destined to leave Elland Road. However, after discussions with then-CEO Angus Kinnear and head coach Daniel Farke, Gnonto decided to stay at the club and was reinstated into the first team.

While that season ended in play-off heartache at Wembley Stadium, the 21-year-old stuck with the club and has played his part this season in the Whites returning to the Premier League. Of course, few will forget Gnonto’s transfer request from two years ago and a banner was even made of the Italian depicted as a baby with the caption: “I not wanna play in the Championship.”

Clearly that is all water under the bridge now and Gnonto even shared a picture of the banner as he celebrated promotion on Friday. Sharing the celebrations, as well as the banner, Gnonto captioned the post: “I not wanna play in the Championship.”

With a further three years remaining on his Leeds contract, Gnonto is expected to be a part of the side next season in the top flight. This campaign has been the winger’s most productive with nine goals and six assists recorded for the Whites.

Leeds will find out their fixtures for the Premier League next month when they are revealed on Wednesday, June 18 at 9am UK time.
