Chelsea to sign £13.5m star who Todd Boehly think is ‘brilliant’ ahead of Luton Town

Chelsea are neck deep in talks with Djordje Petrovic from New England Revolution and could have him before Luton on Friday.

Chelsea are pushing to sign New England Revolution Djordje Petrovic ahead of their Premier League game against Luton Town on Friday evening.

The Blues have reportedly agreed a total package of £13.5million but will pay the MLS side £12.5million for a start before the remaining amount is boxed into add-ons.

Chelsea lost Kepa Arrizabalaga to Real Madrid just a day before the start of the new season and have identified the Serbian shot-stopper as the ideal man to come in and give Robert Sanchez some competition for the number spot.

Petrovic has played 43 times in the MLS for New England Revolution and has two caps for Serbia. His ball-playing ability has also been highlighted as strength with Mauricio Pochettino keen on his keepers being able to start play from the back.

The Chelsea manager admitted they were studying the market and looking to bring in a new goalkeeper before the transfer window closed. He told reporters ahead of the West Ham game: “ This is a good question because we are monitoring the market and hopefully we will see what we can do.”

Robert Sanchez who was signed from Brighton and Hove Albion for £25million has had a rocky start to the season, conceding four goals in his first two games even though most of them have been down to poor defending from the team and brilliant strikes from the opponents.

However, having competition for the spot will increase performance and Chelsea owner Todd Boehly is reported to have described the decision to Djordje Petrovic as brilliant given his knowledge of the MLS.
