David Ornstein: Mason Holgate to undergo Southampton medical with Everton loan exit close

Everton defender Mason Holgate is on the verge of joining Southampton on loan, according to David Ornstein.

The Athletic journalist tweeted on 25 August that the 26-year-old is due to travel down to the south coast on Friday (25 August) to undergo a medical ahead of the switch.

He said the centre-back will join the Saints on a season-long loan deal, but there is no option for him to make a permanent move to St Mary’s included in the agreement.

Unfancied

It’s been made pretty clear during Sean Dyche’s time at Goodison Park that Holgate isn’t really in his plans due to his lack of game time.

The defender only made eight appearances in all competitions last season for the Toffees, with only three of those games coming under the current Blues manager.

A loan move will allow Holgate to go out and earn some much-needed playing time at a crucial point in his career and, if he does well, perhaps the door could be opened back up to him on Merseyside.

There is no option to buy included in the deal, but the Saints may just be waiting to see how he gets on in the Championship for them before committing to a permanent transfer with the Blues.

It’s a shame his time hasn’t worked out how many thought it would at Goodison after the defender showed an awful of promise in his younger years after making just short of 150 appearances for the club and playing for England at youth level.

In other Everton news, Farhad Moshiri has received two new offers to purchase a stake in the club.
