25-year-old wanted to sign for Newcastle, but now he has agreed to join Man United – Romano

Having just missed out on a move to Newcastle United, Marc Cucurella now has the chance to join another Champions League club.

The Spaniard was on Newcastle’s list of left-back targets, with Dan Ashworth very keen to bring him to St James’ Park.

There was talk of a loan deal with an option to buy, with Cucurella seemingly enthused by the prospect of signing for the Magpies before the transfer window closes.

However, wages always felt like they would be an issue, and in the end Newcastle went for someone else. Instead, the Magpies have bought Lewis Hall, with that deal bringing an end to Howe’s interest in Cucurella.

That was a blow for the 25-year-old, as it is clear that he needs a move away from Stamford Bridge. But as one door closes, another opens.

Man United do what Newcastle chose not to

Unless a deal cannot be agreed with Chelsea, it looks all but certain that Cucurella is going to sign for Man United on loan.

Erik ten Hag is doing what Eddie Howe opted not to, taking a punt on a player who massively flopped at Chelsea following a £62million move from Brighton.

It is a risk by Man United, but one they probably need to take given their injury situation. They need someone to come in, and Cucurella is worth a punt.

But Newcastle did not need to take a punt. Instead, the Magpies were able to plan for the future and bring in a player who could become a star at St James’ Park in the coming years.
